Finding a Job
Using the Internet

The Internet is fast becoming one of the most popular resources for career and job search information. Employers are using it to find employees, and more and more job seekers are using the Internet to get smarter about potential opportunities and actually land jobs. Using the Internet for job opportunities is not just for techies anymore! Need Job Search Help? Click here.
A Valuable Resource
Use the Internet before you apply for a job. Mine the wealth of information that is available on company websites, as well as media stories, analysts' remarks about the industry or field, sources such as hoovers.com and vault.com, and industry competitors for the BIG PICTURE. Being fully informed is the critical first step in landing a really good job.

Double-Edged Sword
"The vast exposure the Internet provides can be a double-edged sword," said Margaret Riley-Dikel, a recognized specialist in Internet job search and author. "As a job seeker, you will broaden your reach to prospective employers. The flip side is that you are probably competing against that many more prospective candidates who are angling for that same intriguing position."
Job Search Tips
Know and use the terminology of your industry and profession to describe your experience. The correct and full use of industry terminology will ensure keyword "hits", which is what will bring your resume to the attention of the employer.

Re-post your resume on a weekly basis. Most large job sites list resumes chronologically and recruiters often look at the most current postings. Carefully select the sites to which you will post your resume. Be aware there are some sites (called PUSH sites) that will notify you via email about matching job postings, after you've initially signed up with a profile of your background and your job search objectives.

Focus on your specific area of interest or industry by tapping into professional association websites, state and federal job banks, recruiting firm websites and online newspapers. Everyone posts to monster.com - you'll be lost in the crowd if that's the only place you're posting your resume!

Finally, with all the competition on the Internet, the temptation to lie about experience or add unsubstantiated keywords to your resume is greater than ever. Resume fraud can be grounds to get you fired once you've landed a job. Just "say it like it is" and avoid any problems that might occur later by misrepresenting yourself. Besides, you will be more likely to land a job more closely suited to your background if you stick to the truth.

The Internet can be a powerful job search tool - use it wisely!
